There will always be a debate for which is better, but it really comes down to your personal preferences. We love the benefits of essentials oils, however we do not downplay the great aspects of fragrance oils. In this blog we will take a look at the pros and cons of both types of oils that make your beard products smell great!

Essential Oil Pros - Essential oils are all natural! Many people are looking for all natural products these days, and essential oils would be the way to go. Another pro is that essential oils can actually have therapeutic benefits! Different scents can pick your energy up, or calm you down.  These even have benefits that can nourish your skin and hair. For some a pro will be the scents are not overpowering or lasting days. We like to say beard oil is supposed to go on your face, not in your face.  A final pro is there are amazing essential oil suppliers all around the world working with their proud local plants. It is great to work with them!

Fragrance Oil Pros - Fragrance oils have a lot of pros to them. Likely the biggest pro to fragrance oils is that they can mimic any scent in the world. There is no such thing as an essential oil from leather, but you can create that in a fragrance oil for example.  While serious allergic reactions are rare with either, most people are less likely to have any kind of allergic reaction to fragrance oils. There are some people that do have adverse reactions such as our founder Nick, but more people have real strong allergies to different essential oils. Fragrance oils are created and are much more consistent from batch to batch, as compared to essential oils. They are also stronger in scent potency and longer lasting.

Essential Oil Cons - Essential oils are expensive and much more expensive than most fragrance oils. When you have to extract this product from nature, it is going to cost more. That same process limits the amount of scent options too. Another con is that being from nature there are allergies for some people.  We can likely find a person to for everything on Earth to be allergic to, and essential oils are no different. As a consumer just be aware of your allergies and be sure to ask companies questions. A main con for essential oils for many is that they are not as long lasting or as strong smelling as fragrance oils. Now this may be a pro for some, but we do know many beardsmen love strong and long lasting scents. Essential oils also can vary from batch to batch. Nature is not perfect or consistent, and neither will your essential oils. It is the same when you look at craft beer or craft cider, the more natural the more change can happen.

Fragrance Oil Cons - The main con for fragrance oils for most people would be that it is created in a lab and does not fall under most "natural" definitions. The word "synthetic" is commonly used. They also do not add any benefits other than smelling good. They will not add to the health of your hair or skin in any way, and they do not carry the same therapeutic benefits that we see with essential oils. While there are not many allergies to fragrance oils, they can be irritating to the skin, especially if not used with proper potency in the beard oil.
